A big city like London has many faces and characters. From trendy hangouts to up-and-coming locations, these London suburbs are the key places to be seen and to see a very unique side to this bustling metropolis.
Shoreditch
One of the trendiest parts of London is Shoreditch. Popular for after-work drinks and weekend shopping, Shoreditch has a cosmopolitan feel alongside the historic charm of East London. It has beckoned media types with entertainment facilities and independent cafes, restaurants and bars to get the creative juices flowing.
Camden
Another one for arty types, Camden is full of character with live music nights and vintage fashion boutiques. One of the biggest draws to the area is Camden Market, which offers great bargains, while there’s an overflowing choice of bars, restaurants and clubs for any night of the week. The area came to worldwide prominence following the rise and sudden death of singer-songwriter, Amy Winehouse.
Notting Hill
If you visit Notting Hill at any time it has to be during the Notting Hill Carnival. Popular with American and Canadian expats, this colourful part of West London is blessed with parks, markets and amazing second hand shops. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the setting for Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts’ Notting Hill, so you can stroll through a real part of film history.
Brixton
The rise of Brixton’s popularity is quite staggering. While you can still get a sense of the African-Caribbean community that dominated this area in the ’80s, the face of Brixton has changed dramatically as those from outside have moved in. Brixton Market has become a foodie paradise, while you can watch big bands and DJs play inside Brixton Academy. As the status of Brixton continues to change, it’s important to see this area now before it becomes too gentrified.
Richmond
David Attenborough called it his favourite place on Earth, and he’s been pretty much everywhere. With a beautiful park with free-roaming deer and spectacular views of the Thames on Richmond Hill, this part of London is particularly genteel. Enjoy a drink by the river, catch a show at Richmond Theatre and do a spot of window-shopping.
